Academic Clubs 2006/2007

WEJHS Book Club

Advisor: Ms. Rohr and Mr. Massa

The junior high school book club consists of seventh through ninth grade students who meet on a monthly or bi-monthly basis to dicuss books chosen by the students. The purpose of the book club is to motivate students to read literature outside of the curriculum and to discuss the literature in an envirnonment of peers.

Essex County Math League

Advisor: Ms. Delaura and Ms. McGowan

The Essex County Mathematics League provides a challenging and stimulating opportunity for all high school mathematics students. The League is composed of teams of students from each level of mathematics starting with algebra up through and including trigonometry. The math problems are critical thinking in nature.

The meet is hosted by Caldwell College.

Future Business Leaders of America

Advisor: Ms. Mondadori

The Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) is an organization that was created to simulate a work-like atmosphere for students. Within the club, several groups exist to help the group achieve their overall goals. The members of the club are each individually responsible for making sure that their group maintains the goal. By conducting several fundraising activities throughout the year, FBLA will look to donate a portion of the profits to a charity to be named. Also, the club will take part in the regional competitive events which are held in early January at Mercer Country Community College. These events allow the group to take tests against other chapters of FBLA throughout the state, and if students place in the top 3 of their test, they move on to another round of tests.
It is still not too late to join. If you are still interested in being a member to a prestigious club, contact Ms. Mondadori in Room 16. Dues are $15.

Forensics

Advisor: Mrs. Giordano

Forensics is a club that promotes public speaking. All students in 7th and 8th grades at West Essex Junior High School are encouraged to become involoved in this activity. No previous experience in public speaking is necessary. The members of Forensics participate in tournaments throughout the year and hold demonstrations for elementary schools. The club meets at least two times per month. Daily meeting might be necessary When preparing for a tournament.

Iron Hills Math League

Advisor: Ms. Delaura and Ms. McGowan

The Iron Hills Math League participates in relay math competitions in the Iron Hills Conference. There are 3 meets per year. At each meet two teams of 5 students each participate in 4 relays and one group problem solving session. Speed, accuracy, and teamwork are all vital! We wish our Iron Hills Math League participants the best of luck at these competitions. Please see Mrs. Santucci for meetings and practice Schedules.

Math Counts

Advisor: Mrs. Welfel

Purpose of this club is to prepare for competition against other 7th and 8th graders. The competition is sponsored by New Jersey Institude of Technology (NJIT) and the competitions are on a regional, state, and national level.

The 7th and 8th grade teachers recommend students they believe will enjoy the challenge of the competitions. Meetings are held once a week starting in early November and continuing until the competition in Febuary. The students solve problems provided by the Math Counts organization at our meetings in order to prepare for the competitions.

Every year the 7th graders who participated in the competition the previous year eagerly return to compete as 8th graders. When the students who were part of Math Counts are in high scholl they always tell Mrs. Welfel how much they enjoyed the experience. Although the club services a small number of students, the kids greatly benefit from being a part of Math Counts!

NJ Science Research - Biology

Advisor: Ms. Berthelot

NJ Science Research in Biology Begins in November-December. AP Biology students and strong academic Biology CP students are encouraged to participate in the science research program. The Science Fair, which is held in the spring, accepts applicants from our program. Research topics often include conditions affecting bacterial growth, effects of environmental variables on plants, the effect of stimuli on reaction times and the effectiveness of sunscreens. These are only a few of the possible research topics students may choose to research. Research is done on an after school basis.

NJ Science Research - Chemistry

Advisor: Ms. Elfenbein

The Chemistry Research allows students with an interest in chemistry to conduct independent research outside of class. Students learn the research process, from identifying a problem/question, designing and carrying out the research, and finally presenting the findings at one of several science fairs held around the state. This activity can introduce students to the rigors of research and prepare them for studying science at the collegiate level. Students should have a strong interest in chemistry and be willing to devote their time to a long-term project.

Philosophy Club

The purpose of the Philosophy Club is to give students the opportunity to learn, discuss, and debate a subject presented to them at the beginning of each meeting. As a result of these discussions, it is hoped that the students gain a true understanding of the founding notions that have shaped human-kind.

Robotics Club

The Robotics Club is a club where students design and build a robot that completes various tasks. The robot will compete with other schools. This club is open to any junior or high school student.

Rogate

Resources Offered for Gifted and Talented Education

Advisor: Mrs. Robinson


ROGATE concentrates on an "awareness" or identification year for seventh grade students. Identification is based upon fifth and sixth grade standardized test scores. Identified students are notified in October; membership is voluntary.

The purpose of this organization is to stimulate gifted and talented special activities for junior high school students. ROGATE is a project of the National Talent Network, which offers programs in gifted and talented education. Developing personal research and communication skills, the oppurtunity to take the SAT and receiving copies of NEWS NET, and informal periodical, are among the options available to members. Seventh grade students participate in an academic lecture. Eighth graders are encouraged to attend a research skills workshop to prepare them for an exposition in the spring.

8th Grade Science Club

Advisor: Mrs. Martin

The 8th Grade Science Club allows students to further explore how science is included in our everyday lives. All 8th grade students are eligible to join this exciting club. Meetings will be held in room 128 (Ms. Muller's room) and they last from 2:40 -3:40. A great deal of fun is enjoyed with all the labs. Some of the labs will be: erupting volcanos, crayon candles (to learn abut change in state), giant pretzels (to learn about chemical changes), and recycled paper.

Science Olympics

Advisor: Ms. Elfenbein

NJ Chemistry Olympics is an academic competition sponsored by the Teacher Affiliate Group of the American Chemical Society. The competition takes place at New Jersey Institute of Technology in the spring. Teams prepare for their participation in research events, and general events. A background knowledge of Chemistry, time and dedication to prepare for events, willingness to have fun and learn more about the exciting world of Chemistry.

Fine and Performing Arts Clubs

Junior High School Art Club

Advisor: Ms. Tekel

The West Essex Junior High School Art Club meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of every month in room 132. The dues for the club are $5.00 which covers the cost of the art supplies. Activities include painting, drawing, papier mache, leather crafts and many more fun and unique projects. All students are welcome to join at any time throughout the year. Regular attendance is not mandatory. It is a chance for students who could not fit art into their schedule to learn about all forms of art.

Choirs

"MidKnights" Select Choir

"MidKnights" is the choir that performs at the Winter and Spring concerts and other events. Auditions for Select Choir are held in September. Membership is open to all Chorus students.

"KnightStars"Junior High School Jazz Choir

The KnightSounds is the jazz choir for the Junior High School. They perform at the Jazz Concert in May and other events as they become available. Auditions will be held in December.

Dance

Dance Team – Varsity

Advisor: Ms. M. Drab/ Ms. S. DeVries

An advanced tryout group that is composed of West Essex 9th-12th graders. Activities include performing for the community at local events, school pep assemblies, and Varsity football and basketball games. Dance combinations are learned by the advisor, guest choreographers, and by senior dancers within the context of original choreography, in addition to exploring the essential performance skills. West Essex Varsity Dance Team's season begins in August for private dance camp. In January all teams perform in an annual dance show. The season culminates with next school year’s team tryouts that take place in April.

Junior Varsity Dance Team - SHS & JHS

The JV dance team consists of 7th-9th graders who meet two days a week throughout the school year. This team is used for preparation for the tryout Varsity team. This group's activities include performing for the community at local events as wells as pep assemblies, JV football and basketball games, and the annual Dance show in January. West Essex Junior Varsity Dance Team starts in September and culminates in April/ May. Dancers going into 9th grade can tryout for the Varsity team in April.

Dance Program - JHS

Intramurals

The Junior High Intramural program is an activity designed to involve students who do not have the time to devote to a 7th and 8th grade team. The only requirement is a pair of sneakers. There is open gym on all Wednesdays for the year. Also tournaments in indoor soccer, basketball, volleyball, floor hockey, and flag football will be held throughout the year.

Jazz Ensemble

Advisor: Mr. Batsch

The Jazz Band functions as a link to a genre of music that might not otherwise be performed. Jazz is the only true form of American music, and knowing that, it is important for students to have the opportunity to learn and play this music. The Jazz Band also practices diligently and performs in all types of local venues.

Masquers

West Essex Drama Club

Advisor: John Boronow
Stage Crew Advisor: Mr. Oberg

Masquers is the West Essex Drama Club that provides opportunity for Student Dramatic productions. Students can perform, design, or be part of the technical crew. There are no requirements to participate in the technical side of the productions (lights, stage crew, sound, etc.). However, there are auditions that are open to all students for roles in the actual productions. Being a part of Masquers includes an eight week rehearsal schedule that can incorporate all days of the week, and sometimes week-ends as well. Stage crew meets most Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the year.

Lighting Crew

Lighting crew is the team that works specifically with any performances that are held in the high school auditorium. Working with a new state of the art computerized lighting system, members learn how to hang and set stage lights, as well as basic principles of stage lighting.

French Club/French Honor Society

Italian Club/Italian Honor Society

Advisor: Mrs. L. Bazzarelli and Ms. Barbone

Societa` Onoraria Italica: Membership is restricted to students enrolled in classes beyond the second year. Candidates must have achieved an average of 90% or above in Italian. Candidates must also have maintained a general scholarship of 80% or above in all other classes. There is a beautiful induction ceremony in the Spring. The new candidates are required to attend several rehearsals first. At the induction ceremony, they recite the oath on stage in Italian. The members then tutor other students in Italian. They also promise to continue the study of the Italian language and culture. Most members join the Italian Club and participate in fun cultural activities.

Latin Club/Latin Honor Society

To be inducted into the Latin Honor Society the students must earn an A- or better every quarter throughout their first two years of Latin study. The induction ceremony for the Latin Honor Society is held every Spring.

Spanish Club/Spanish Honor Society

National Art Honor Society

The West Essex Chapter of the National Art Honor Society is open to students in grades 10-12 who have maintained a B average of better in JUST their art courses from grades 9 and up. This prestigious organization recognizes students for art scholarship, character and service to the community.

National Honor Society - SHS

Advisor: Mr. Lancaster

The purpose of this club is to create an enthusiam for scholarship, to promote worth leadership, to encourage the development of character, to stimulate a desire to reder service in students at West Essex High School. Members will participate in peer tutoring, fundraising endeavors, charitable contributions and multiple community service projects.

To be a part of this society, you must have at least one semester at West Essex and be a member of the junior or senior class. You must also have a GPA of 3.75 or better. Eligibility is based upon character, leadership and service.

National Honor Society - JHS

Advisor: Ms. Smith and Ms. Phillips

The purpose of the National Junior Honor Society is to perform community service. Students are inducted into the Honor Society in 8th grade.

Knightlights Magazine

Junior High Literary Magazine

Advisor: Mrs. S. Giordano

Knightlights is the Junior High Literary magazine. All Junior High students may participate in this club. No previous experience is needed. The purpose of this activity is to foster writing skills in the students. The club meets two times per month until a few weeks prior to publication when it is usually necessary to meet daily. Every Spring a major issue of the Knightlights is published. The Knightlights Club sponsors school wide writing contests.

The Knightly News

The Knightly News is a junior high school publication for students, by students. The contributors to the newspaper consist of seventh through ninth grade students. Anyone interested in expressing an opinion or sharing other "newsworthy" information is encouraged to submit an article to the next issue of The Knightly News.

Roundtable

Roundtable is a literary magazine made up of students' submissions of poetry and short stories. Students' artwork is also included. Meetings are weekly where poetical works are critiqued. Selections for the magazine are the result of students/advisor meetings.

Steppingstone

The Steppingstone is the Junior High Yearbook. All 9th graders are welcome to join the staff of the yearbook. There are five committees: Photographers, Collect ad Organize, Paste-up, Sales, and Voting. Meetings are held in room 133.

Wessex Wire

Advisor: Ms. Corcoran

The Wessex Wire, the West Essex High School award-winning school newspaper, is entirely student-produced.

Anyone including students, faculty, and members of the surrounding school community with an opinion either about an already published story in the Wire or about another pertinent issue affecting West Essex students and/or staff is invited to write a letter to the editor to be published in the Wire. All letters must state opinions that are based on fact and the editorial board does reserve the right to edit letters for length and objectionable content. Copies of the Wire editorial policy are available upon request. Letters may be dropped off in room 15 of the high school or mailed to Wessex Wire, c/o West Essex Senior High School, 65 West Greenbrook Road, North Caldwell, NJ 07006. The Wessex Wire is produced by students enrolled in three levels of journalism classes; however, all students are encouraged to join the staff.

The Wessex Wire would like to encourage everyone to contribute letters to the editor, stories, reviews, or pictures. The following are dates of distribution along with copy deadlines by which any pieces must be submitted. We will be distributing the newspaper the following dates throughout the school year:

Character Education Club

The Character Education Club is an organization for students in Grades 7 through 9. Club requirements include attendance at meetings during appropriate lunch periods and after school. Participation in at least one community service project is also encouraged. In addition, fundraising projects will take place during the school year and donations will be made to selected organizations.

The purpose of the Character Education Club is threefold. To BUILD CHARACTER by encouraging ethical thinking; To BUILD CONFIDENCE by motivating students to do their personal best; and To BUILD COMMUNITY by inspiring students at West Essex Junior High School to contribute to the world around them while honoring the diversity that makes our country great.

E.R.A.S.E.

Advisor: Mrs. Bryen

End Racism and Sexism Everywhere is a club to eliminate discrimination in not only the West Essex School District but the entire world. The Goal of this club is to promote tolerance and acceptance of other cultures and races. Activities such as prejudice reduction through literature, field trips, discussions, work-shops and cultural dinners help to further the club's message. The group is currently sponsoring a child in Honduras. This year, the club will have guest speakers and a major fundraiser.

Any student is welcome to join E.R.A.S.E. Meeting will be posted on the E.R.A.S.E. bulletin board.

Key Club

Official Key Club Website

The Key Club is a national organization of Grade 9-12 students who participate in a variety of service activities to benefit their schools and communities. The organization is sponsored by Kiwanis Clubs internationally. The Roseland Kiwanis Club sponsors both the Key Clubs at the High School and at the Junior High.

To become a member of the club, you must be recommended by one of your teachers. Club requirements include attendance at meetings after school and participation in at least one service activity. The club has a variety of fundraising projects during the year that you will be asked to support. Local projects and activities are decided by the members of the club. The club members visit local nursing homes and hospitals. Each Spring the new officers and members attend the Key Club Convention in the Poconos with over a thousand other "Key Clubbers" from New Jersey. In June the club sponsors "kiss a senior good-bye.:

Peer Leadership

Advisor: Mrs. Bryen

Talking to a Peer Leader may be the first step many students are comfortable taking in order to work a problem out. Peer Leaders are a select group of senior high school students who have been professionally trained to do cross-age teaching, group work, and mentoring. Peer Leaders complete a full training in the art of listening and refering their peers to the appropriate source. The Peer Leaders willingness to assist others is very much appreciated!

SADD

Advisor: Elizabeth Ricafort

SADD's mission simply stated:

To provide students with the best prevention and intervention tools possible to deal with the issues of underage drinking, other drug use, impaired driving and other destructive decisions.

SADD Profile

For 25 years, SADD has been committed to empowering young people to lead education and prevention initiatives in their schools and communities. Founded as Students Against Driving Drunk in 1981 in Wayland, Massachusetts, SADD has grown to become the nation’s dominant peer-to-peer youth education and prevention organization with thousands of chapters in middle schools, high schools and colleges. In 1997, in response to requests from SADD students themselves, SADD expanded its mission and name and now sponsors chapters called Students Against Destructive Decisions. SADD continues to endorse a firm "No Use" message related to use of alcohol and other drugs. With its expanded focus, SADD now highlights prevention of all destructive behaviors and attitudes that are harmful to young people, including underage drinking, substance abuse, impaired driving, violence, and suicide.

WE Help

Advisor: Mrs. Jameson

A service organization aimed at increasing community service opportunities for students, staff, and parents within the WE community. Our motto is "to give much is to receive much." We raise money through fund raisers, hold and staff events, organize and run drives for needed items, and participate in team building community spirit building projects such as Habitat for Humanities home building sessions. WeHelp builds community leadership, caring, and sharing.

WE CARE, West Essex Coalition for the Active Restoration of the Environment, is a service and learning organization dedicated to promoting school-wide and community environmental awareness. Club members promote responsible use of resources through activities such as the school-wide recycling program. WE CARE members are empowered to put their ideas into practice through fund raising, club stewardship, and educational activities.
